Kill Your Competitors

Once upon a time, there was a fried chicken chain of outlets.

And I was a big fan.

Then along came another competing chain of outlets.

Only this time the chickens weren’t fried.

They were roasted in various delightful flavors.

A far cry from just dipping chicken in secret batter and some oil cooked in a pressure cooker.

A GREAT alternative to fried chicken.

You think fried chickens compete only with fried chickens?

Of course not, silly.

Chickens compete with chickens, fried or otherwise.

If I wasn’t thinking of fried chickens, I was thinking of roasted chickens.

Or grilled chickens.

Or steamed chickens.

Or boiled chickens.

Or…well, you get the idea.

There are more to it, and they’re not even chickens.

But I’ll leave that for another post.

Anyway, fried chickens had no chance with the new, more sexy, more flavorful, roasted chickens.

The fried chicken company started to take action to protect its profits from the danger.

Or risk going under in due time.

There were many things that it could do.

Like increasing its marketing budget to fight the threat head on.

But it took a more potent, and strategically important, route.

It bought out its competitor.

And then killed it completely.

And there were no more wonderful roasted chicken from then on.

And *sniff* – I went back to buying fried chicken forevermore.
