Being an Internet user since 1995, and an Internet Entrepreneur since 1999, I can summarize the 2 main ways to make money online as follows:
You either sell something directly to your Customers,
or you refer Prospects or Customers to those who do.
It isn't that different from the offline world, other than the ubiquitous use of technology in the online alternative. The latter opens up new worlds of awesome leverage as computers, software and the Internet all combine with powerful selling and marketing concepts to create bigger fortunes at quicker speeds with far less effort and fewer employees for Entrepreneurs who embrace them.
If you're just starting off trying to make money online, EITHER way (done the Sen Ze way) can be suitable for you. Neither is better than the other, as each method has its own advantages. But it helps to know that it's either this way or that way, so things have been narrowed down for you considerably, although there are multiple Internet Business Models that you can use to do either method.
The 2 ways are described in more detail below. Have an open mind and see if the Merchant model suits you better even though it may appear to be harder to do (hint: not necessarily. It could in fact be easier).
Bear in mind that the words "Merchant" or "Affiliate" are just convenient labels to describe the 2 respective roles you can take. They could well be "Sellers" or "Vendors" or "Traders" for "Merchants"; and "Agents" or "Deal Makers" or "Referrers" for "Affiliates".
"Products" include "Services". "Products" also mean "Assets". The plural includes the singular, so you don't have to sell multiple items of something you produce or sourced from Suppliers to Customers on a regular basis. It could well be that one car you're trying to get rid of as well, using the Internet as your vehicle for doing so - although you would hardly be called an "Entrepreneur" in this case.
Now that we're clear on the labels, let's begin:

You sell your own products via your own web site, or on another's (like eBay.com).
You can sell tangible products like shoes and gadgets that you will have to physically ship over to your Customers, or intangible products like PDF documents (delivery is via a direct download), access codes to your membership site (delivery of access codes is via e-mail), and ad space on your web site or blog (delivery is via display of ads over time).
Main Advantage:
You can have hundreds or thousands of Affiliates working for you to bring Leads or Customers for your products.
You can pay your Affiliates for every lead or sale, AFTER the lead or sale has been captured, so you're paying your Affiliates with money you have already collected. This is a risk-free marketing arrangement for you.

Possess Wanted Products + Set Up Web Site To Sell Them + Recruit Savvy Affiliates To Market For You In Addition To The Usual Internet Marketing Methods

You earn a commission for every lead or sale resulting from your referral.

You don't have to create products of your own, or know how to sell them to Prospects at your web site, or deal with Customer support issues.

Either way to make money online
is well and good.
Note that sometimes you can be BOTH a Merchant and an Affiliate as it depends on what you do to earn your money.
For example, if you want to make money blogging, you may be selling ads on your blog or membership to it (in which case you're a Merchant), or you may be referring Prospects to Merchants via your blog posts to earn a commission for every successful lead or sale (in which case you're their Affiliate). Note that the core concepts for earning money online are simple. It's their execution that's hard for many, because technical systems are involved - and most people aren't technically savvy.
